PTFE:protecting the paintwork of vehicles

PTFE is not only used in the car industry but also in the caravan and camper van market and is even used in aviation on airplanes and marine on boats. So, as you can see PTFE is certainly making a big name for itself.Often car salesmen try to persuade their clients to spend a few hundred pounds extra on getting the paintwork protected before their new purchase leaves the sales room. This extra purchase is on top of their new car. They are simply using a substance such as a PTFE based product and this protection can last for several years.

For those chemists out there, PTFE is actually polytetrafluoroethylene (or Teflon). The molecular structure of PTFE is based on a chain of carbon atoms (like all polymers). Unlike some other fluoropolymers, this Teflon chain is completely surrounded by fluorine atoms. The bond between the carbon and fluorine is extremely strong, and the fluorine atoms help protect the less stable carbon chain. This is what Teflon its unique and unusual properties. As well as its extreme slipperiness, it is also inert to almost every known chemical. This is why it is so good at protecting the paintwork of vehicles and it leaves an incredible shine.
