PTFE – An Excellent Paintwork Pprotector

If you aren’t looking for the best car polish out there, then you should be, and you should be for several reasons. Apart from your car being your pride and joy and a big investment, you need to remember that your vehicle is under constant attack by the sun’s ultra violet rays, industrial fall out and acid rain. If your car is left unprotected from these elements then the paintwork will surely suffer irreversible damage. Most car protection products out there are made from waxes, and just like any wax does when subjected to the suns heat, or any other heat, it starts to melt and deteriorate. Then you buy more, and you wax your car again, and the car waxing companies are growing bigger and bigger all the time as you part with more and more cash.

Well did you know there’s a product out there that has been around for a while now; a product that only usually shows itself when a new car salesman asks you if you want to spend more of your hard earnt cash on having your new car paintwork protected. Of course most people would spend the extra few hundred on top of the few thousand already spent to protect their new pride and joy. What they are generally using to protect your car is PTFE car polish and this is the most slippery substance in the world. It has now been introduced into the car market in various different forms, and produces astounding results.PTFE is not only used in car protection products but also in the marine and aviation industry and has even become a big player in both the caravan and the motorhome market. It simply cannot be ignored as an excellent paintwork protector.

Defining today’s PTFE paste extrusion process

The PTFE polymer resin comes in a powder form that only has an average grain size of around .2mm. The powder itself is very wax-like, and as such can be easily bruised or sheared through handling, especially with mechanical means. Because of this, the material can only be handled in an environment of around 20C, and must be mixed first with either mineral spirits or some other kind of extrusion aid to bind the material together before processing. That processing will take the following steps:

Compression: In order to prepare the material for extrusion, the PTFE mix must be first compressed into a billet form using a hydraulic press. This will take around two hours to complete, including dwell time, in order to ensure that no air bubbles remain in the compressed polymer.

Extrusion: The compressed polymer is now loaded into the extrusion mold, with the die and mandrel clamped on. The design of the die will define not only the strength of the resulting tube, but will also determine its final dimensions, including inner wall strength. During extrusion the material is pressed against the die and mandrel, forcing the material into the required shape. Any Teflon tubing produced during this phase is considered to be of “green” material, and it can be easily damaged while in this state.

Curing: The green Teflon tubing is taken from the extruder and passed through an oven at low temperature during this phase. The purpose of this is evaporate the mineral spirits or extrusion binders used to keep the resin together during preparation. Leaving those chemicals within the polymer now could weaken its material strength, and leave it open to combustion should it ever reach the flash point of the mineral spirits while in use. This whole process can take up to 24 hours to complete, depending on the thickness of the finished tubing.

Cutting: Once the PTFE extruded tubing has been cured and all binders have been evaporated, the tubing is first cleaned via oven sterilization, in accordance with the ISO Grade VI clean room guidelines, the minimum requirement for Teflon tubing. The product is then cut into custom lengths for packaging. If the intended product is for use in the medical field, all lengths will have the ends capped as soon as it leaves the oven, preserving the sterilized surface inside the tube prior to packaging and shipping.

Mechanical PTFE: Economical,Reprocessed

Mechanical PTFE is an economical, reprocessed PTFE with slightly lower physical properties than virgin grade. It is also referred to as “recycled” or “reclaimed”. Reprocessed material is added during the manufacturing process; usually a small percentage but it varies. It is more economical than virgin.

This is the grade used for most applications, for less demanding uses where high purity materials are not required, such as noncritical chemical, electrical, and mechanical applications. It has better wear resistance and compressive strength than virgin grade. Not suitable for food contact.

PTFE is Used Worldwide and Most Slippery Material

PTFE is engineered with a ratio of four fluorine atoms to every two carbon atoms. This means, that the carbon center of the molecule is shielded by fluorine atoms. This means that molecule is almost essentially totally shielded from contact with other molecules. This means that it’s virtually impossible for any other substance to reach the carbon atom. Because of the substance’s unique carbon to fluorine ratio, its bond is just about unbreakable. However, this is not all. The chemical fluorine is also severely anti-social.

Put quite simply, it wants nothing to do with other atoms. It is the loner of the chemical world. As part of the PTFE compound, it’s “goal” is to stay alone and avoid all contact with other atoms. Because of this, anything that comes close is pushed away and doesn’t stick to whatever surface is coated with PTFE. For this very reason, PTFE is used worldwide as the world’s most slippery material.

When Using Silicone Bakeware

When using silicone bakeware, you will not have to add fatty butters or shortening to your baked goods to prevent sticking. This one feature makes silicone bakeware safer for your heart health than other products. The baked goods simply fall away from the sides of the pan with a simple twist. Banana breads roll right out of silicone loaf pans and cookies slide right off the surface of cookie sheets.

Your collection of silicone bakeware is flexible and can be stored anywhere. The lightweight materials make it an ideal choice for use on camping trips. Pack it up and carry it wherever you need to take it. The light and flexible bakeware can be folded away in your suitcase for your family camping trips.

Using An At-home Scar Product

Wearing silicone sheets for months at a time can call attention to home removal especially if it is one a part of the body that people frequently notice such as one the face. Unfortunately, some people affected by scars suffer real shame concerning their scar, making a silicone gel removal option more discreet and ultimately less distracting and less embarrassing for the user.

You’ll also hear about vitamins, moisturizers (and that onion extract) used in over-the-counter, scar creams and gels. However, while these ingredients are effective, the reality is that when you combine the affordability and superior effectiveness of using a silicone based scar treatment, the best removal option may very well be using an at-home scar product such as a silicone scar gel.

PTFE:protecting the paintwork of vehicles

PTFE is not only used in the car industry but also in the caravan and camper van market and is even used in aviation on airplanes and marine on boats. So, as you can see PTFE is certainly making a big name for itself.Often car salesmen try to persuade their clients to spend a few hundred pounds extra on getting the paintwork protected before their new purchase leaves the sales room. This extra purchase is on top of their new car. They are simply using a substance such as a PTFE based product and this protection can last for several years.

For those chemists out there, PTFE is actually polytetrafluoroethylene (or Teflon). The molecular structure of PTFE is based on a chain of carbon atoms (like all polymers). Unlike some other fluoropolymers, this Teflon chain is completely surrounded by fluorine atoms. The bond between the carbon and fluorine is extremely strong, and the fluorine atoms help protect the less stable carbon chain. This is what Teflon its unique and unusual properties. As well as its extreme slipperiness, it is also inert to almost every known chemical. This is why it is so good at protecting the paintwork of vehicles and it leaves an incredible shine.

Using – The ABCs of PTFE

PV limits for PTFE approach zero at temperatures between 550F and 600 F. Useful PV limits must take into account the composition’s wear characteristics and allowable wear for the application. When considering PTFE for dry lubrication, low friction, you must consider ‘creep’ or ‘cold flow’. Generally, a plastic material subjected to continuous load experiences a continued deformation with time called creep or cold flow. Deformation can be significant, even at room temperature or below; hence, the name ‘cold flow’.

Creep is defined as the total deformation under stress after a specified time in a given environment beyond that instantaneous strain which occurs immediately upon loading. Independent variables affecting creep are time under load, temperature, and load or stress level. So long as the stress level is below the elastic limit of the material, performance is sustainable. And beyond a certain point, creep is small and may be neglected for many applications. In many cases, too, there is compressive recovery from various percentages of strain. Nearly complete where the original strain does not exceed the yield strain.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) – Industrial Plastic

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is an industrial plastic useful for its chemical inertness and its high-purity properties, allowing it to perform well even under extreme temperatures, corrosive environments and within acidic fluids. The chemical resistance properties make PTFE a remarkably versatile polymer and therefore PTFE solenoid valves are commonly used in harsh industrial applications.

PVDF plastic (polyvinylidene fluoride) is another industrial polymer with excellent high purity, abrasion resistant, and chemical resistant properties. It is also available in FDA compliant grades. PVDF is a high tech plastic material from the fluoropolymer family and is typically used in applications and processes whose extreme conditions require the highest purity. PVDF high purity plastic valves are particularly suited to adverse conditions thanks to the material’s strength, resistance to acids, bases, solvents and heat, as well as its property of low smoke generation in the event of a fire.

The sealing surfaces of typical High Purity Plastic and PTFE Solenoid Valves can be purchased in three different internal configurations; PTFE with Viton O-Rings, PTFE with Kalrez O-Rings, and an all PTFE wetted surface design. The valves are protected from the harsh industrial environment when in operation by long lasting, durable PTFE diaphragms, ensuring a long and reliable service life. Each of these PTFE Solenoid Valve types can be configured to fit various shapes, fittings, connections, power supplies and flow configurations or custom made to order from specialty plastic fabrication manufacturers.

Besides Household and Personal Use – PTFE

Besides household and personal use, PTFE is widely used in a variety of business industries. The Steel and Chemical Processing Industries are two prime examples. These industries need strong and reliable hoses and tubing to transfer highly caustic and corrosive chemicals. They work with high temperatures to produce their products or services and they have to have a means for withstanding the heat. Teflon is great since it is carries the heat resistant and corrosion or stress free characteristics. PTFE tubing and hoses deteriorates less rapidly than metal piping. Manufacturers are catching on to this cost saving technique.

As you can see, PTFE properties are endless. They assist us with day to day tasks like cooking, cleaning, and driving. They contribute to our beauty prepping. And, PTFE’s play a major role in the processes of industries like the Steel and the Chemical Processing Industry. Plunkett and DuPont might not have realized just how far their development would go. They created a product that remains essential to many functions in society today.
